Abstract

Wojcieszów is located in the southwestern part of Silesia, in the Kaczawskie Mountains area of the Western Sudetes. Historically, it was situated within the borders of the Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor. The village is distinguished by a multitude of residential buildings that have functioned over the centuries, which was a consequence of significant land ownership fragmentation as well as the village’s size, i.e., its area and economic potential.

The author’s goal was to attempt to identify medieval and Renaissance noble residences based on analysis of written sources, historical cartography, architectural research on the Stöckel Palace, and field inspection of selected buildings. The essence of the considerations is to indicate the location of historical farmsteads and manors, present data on nomenclature, and provide information from studies concerning changes in land ownership of estates in Wojcieszów.

The results of the presented analyses enable recognition of families possessing estates in Wojcieszów and dating the current area of the town to the Middle Ages period, the time of greatest ownership fragmentation in the 17th-18th centuries, and final transformations related to merging and disappearance of individual estates in light of the town’s industrial development. Based on the collected information, it is possible to date existing palaces to the times of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
